Cultural Advice

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website contains names, images, and voices of deceased persons.

In addition, some articles contain terms or views that were acceptable within mainstream Australian culture in the period in which they were written, but may no longer be considered appropriate.

These articles do not necessarily reflect the views of The Australian National University.

Older articles are being reviewed with a view to bringing them into line with contemporary values but the original text will remain available for historical context.

The latest issue of National Centre of Biography's newsletter, Biography Footnotes is out now! Click here to read issue 24.

Inside we celebrate the launch of The Quest for Indigenous Recognition and mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Indigenous Australian Dictionary of Biography. We also celebrate the publication of Melanie Nolan’s Biography: An Historiography, Stephen Wilk’s ‘Order, Order!’, and a new special issue of the Journal of Biography and History. Pat Buckridge is awarded the ADB Medal for his long and distinguished service, and we pay tribute to two esteemed scholars of convict history, Trish Downes and Babette Smith. You can also read Chris Wallace’s Seymour Lecture and hear about some of the other projects that have kept the NCB/ADB busy this year.
